Home Care Overview at the Haven in Allyn

Home Care Overview at The Haven in Allyn: Mackenzie Murphy Director of Home Care Services.

My name is Mackenzie Murphy and I am the Director of Home Care at Haven in Allyn. I married my high school sweetheart in 2018 – we graduated high school and college, did long distance, and finally moved across the country together. We now live in Allyn, Washington after growing up in the midwest.

As cheesy as it sounds, I’ve always loved taking care of others, but only decided to get into healthcare when my grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I saw firsthand that healthcare could be a huge blessing, but also came with a lot of difficulties. It inspired me to be an advocate and light for patients and their families during their darkest day.

My career began after I received my CNA at 16 years old and accepted a job as an in-home caregiver for a client with Alzheimer’s; my duties included assistance with personal hygiene, companion care, and care for the family. I quickly realized that this was my passion and something I wanted to further pursue into college / adulthood.

During college, I worked in the Intensive Care Unit as a student nurse and was able to hone in on my critical care skills. I also chose extensive rotations in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a medical unit at the local prison. As different as these units were, I was able to diversify my healthcare knowledge and feel comfortable in many settings.

I got my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Allen College in Waterloo, IA. After graduating Summa Cum Laude, I moved out to Washington state and became a registered nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center. I was hired on their Orthopedic Surgical Floor, but floated to various units in the hospital including oncology, emergency room, and post surgery. I loved that each day brought something new, but missed the intimacy that long term care brought. In 2020, I decided to return back to long term care and accepted a job as a Director of Nursing at an Alzheimer’s residence in Gig Harbor, Washington.

After moving to Allyn, I fell in love with the community and close-knit bonds that are here. It is important to me to feel like I am participating and giving back to this community. In 2023, the Haven’s registered nurse, Karly, told me there was opportunity right down the hill from my house. I had heard such positive things about the Haven and was excited to join the team! I look forward to serving Mason County and the surrounding areas for years to come.

The Home Care Process:

  • Contact me via phone or email to schedule an assessment for you or a loved one.
  • Phone - 360-277-0636 (office)
  • Email - haven_homecare@outlook.com
  • At the assessment, a full head-to-toe evaluation is completed, along with personal needs and shift requests. I also take this time to evaluate personalities so I can best match a caregiver to your needs and personality type.
  • I reach out to our team of experienced caregivers to schedule initial meetings and coverage.
  • The first few visits, I join the caregiver to ensure there is a smooth transition of care and understanding of responsibilities.
  • I check in routinely to make sure needs are met and no changes in care have occurred.
  • Outside of routine visits, I am always available for questions / concerns.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a monumental occasion, graced by the warm reception from the community. We gathered at the new clubhouse location, a space filled with optimism and the promise of a supportive, empowering environment. The event wasn’t just about the ceremonial snip of the ribbon, it was a celebration of a milestone in community solidarity. With a wonderful array of food and beverages, the attendees savored more than just the refreshments; they relished the beginning of a journey towards wellness and recovery. The enthusiasm and positivity were palpable as community members came together in large numbers to express their support. The impressive turnout was a testament to our community's shared belief in the transformative power of peer-support and collective healing.
